Autumn in Pennsylvania
Posted 2013-09-30 by Blake Wrigley in Community

I am grateful to live in a place where we have the Autumn season. It is such a beautiful time of the year and provides such a nice transition from the warmer months to the cold. Fall provides us time to pause and reflect on our year thus far, while allowing us to prepare for winter. In a time when all around us nature is slowing down, growing quiet, and going dormant, we are able to breathe in the fresh, cool air and enjoy the season of color, harvest, and sweaters.

There are many ways to make the most of your Autumn this year ... for you, your family and friends. Here are ten fun ideas for activities and events in the area this season:

  1. Go for a hike and search for birds and other wildlife.
  2. Make some hot apple cider or hot chocolate, grab blankets and chairs, head outside for some star-gazing.
  3. Take your family to a corn maze and pumpkin patch.
  4. Bake a pie or make some homemade soup using local food from a nearby farm or orchard. Frecon's in Boyertown allows you to pick your own apples, pears and pumpkins until Oct. 27th! Check them out:
  5. Visit a local winery.
  6. Take a bike ride on a wooded trail and experience the wonderful Fall foliage. The Schuylkill River Trail and the Perkiomen Trail are beautiful!
  7. Check out a nearby state or county park for outdoor programs they are hosting this season (most of these are free!) Some beautiful local parks include French Creek State Park, Green Lane Park, Marsh Creek State Park.
  8. Look for local festivals and community events in the area. October is filled with them! Reading's Goggleworks has an art festival Oct. 5th-6th  ( Frecon's Pickfest and Pottstown's Schuylkill River Fest ( are both Oct. 12th.
  9. Visit a farmer's market before the season ends. Phoenixville has a great farmer's market that is open until November (
  10. Fall is a season of harvest and natural wonder. Consider setting some of your money or your time aside this Autumn and contribute to an organization that cares for the hungry or the enivronment. Get your family involved!
